About

Mission Statement

OPEN is an uncoached group of swimmers whose primary focus is to grow participation in OMS while promoting competition and camaraderie based on a list of simple fundamentals:

ü  Involvement in Pool and Open Water competition.

ü  Coaching and encouragement within the group.

ü  Opportunity for competition, including relay placement for individuals or teams without enough swimmers to form a relay team.

ü  Respect and encouragement among teammates.

ü  Regular opportunities for fun and socializing.

ü  Recruitment of new swimmers for OMS and OPEN.

Who we are: We are the OPEN Narwhals. We are a group of Oregon Masters Swimmers who have formed a team that is both fun and competitive with the purpose of promoting and enjoying  the health benefits and comradery of masters swimming.  While we don’t have our own specific home pool, many of us meet in several pools in the Portland metro-area for regular workouts.  Some members really focus on the pool meets.  Some members really get pumped up for the open water swims, some of us do both!  If you’re a new masters swimmer looking for a team-think OPEN! If you live or swim in an area with no established masters team-think OPEN! If you’re not content with your present masters team-think OPEN!  If your present team isn’t into competition and you’d like to swim relays and compete in meets with great team mates-think OPEN! You can still train with your other team, you’ll just compete at the OMS championships as a proud member of OPEN!  You can register now for 2011 with Oregon Masters Swimming (OMS/USMS), so why not be part of a special group of fun and supportive swimmers? When you sign up with OMS, choose OPEN as your local OMS team!  We are growing , we are strong, we are fun, we are supportive, we are NARWHALS!

DISCLAIMER: While we are known as the OPEN Narwhals, let’s be clear that we welcome swimmers of all abilities and all levels of fitness.  We encourage competitiveness but when we talk about being competitive we mean that if you can have fun, support your team members, enjoy yourselves, and enjoy swimming, then this is what makes an “OPEN Narwhal”!  We’re very competitive in the meets and open water events, but we have the most fun and don’t take ourselves too seriously.  After all, Masters swimming is about friends as well as fitness and competition!  If you can enjoy swimming and have fun, then you’re an OPEN Narwhal!
